Ed Bennett has updated his latest list of U.S. hospitals using social media just in time for the Mayo Ragan Third Annual Health Care Social Media Summit this week. He’s keynoting at the event, so he and I sat down for a few minutes last night to talk about the list, how it helps and why he started it.
Bennett manages web operations at the University of Maryland Medical Center (UMMC). For several years in the 90’s he watched hospitals drag their feet when it came to developing websites. “There were some early adopters, and then everybody else comes along later,” he explains.
When social media started, he recognized the same pattern. He believed in social media and knew that hospitals would need some motivation to join the parade. So he teamed with Dave Ekrem, manager of web development for MassGeneral Hospital for Children, to initiate the list. (We wrote about Ekrem earlier this year.) Now it lives on his website, Found in Cache.
The most gratifying calls
“I believed tracking hospitals would be a good resource for people inside hospitals who were evangelizing for social media,” Ed says. “The most gratifying thing to me is when I get emails from somebody in a small hospital saying, ‘Thank you for the list. I showed it to my boss.’”
Ed thinks we’ve started to plateau in the use of social media in hospitals. “All the early adopters are on board,” he says. “All the people in organizations who have decision-making authority and can go ahead and do it have done it. Now we’re in the second phase.”
If you’re not on board yet, it’s time to get involved. People are having conversations out there. They’re talking about your hospital, and you need to be a part of it. You don’t have to be Mayo Clinic to have a social media presence. Start small and grow from there.
You can start by showing this list to your boss!
