Paul Levy, President and CEO of Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, tackled an issue in his August 29th blog that sometimes gets lost in our high tech world … words matter. He recalled an experience by a friend who went to the Emergency Room and, after tests, the doctor prefaced the diagnosis with, “I hate it when I have to give this kind of news.” The patient felt the physician cared more about how the news impacted the physician than the patient. “Most of our patients are older and don’t use social media.” Oh, if only I had a nickel for every time someone has said that … (an often-used saying from my 80-something dad).
Many of us have heard hospital administrators cite the age factor as a reason to explain their resistance to allowing their marketing departments to adopt social media. Some of us may have even used this reason ourselves. In fact, social media did gain favor with the younger demographic at first, but new research by the Pew Internet and American Life Project indicates that the older crowd has made significant gains in social media use. If your hospital has been slow to adopt social media, the recent report released by Nielsen Wire may just be the kindling for your social media fire. Nielsen, which gained credibility with its TV rating system, now measures online activity… and social networks and blogs have taken the top spot. In just one year, time spent on blogs and social networks increased from 15.8 percent to 22.7 percent–nearly ¼ of the time spent online. (more…)

Today we launch the Hive Strategies blog. This specific project has been nearly a year in the making. But in reality, it has been in the works for more than two decades.
In 1988 we started helping hospitals market their services, and in the 22 years since, we have added numerous physician practices and a Medicare health plan to our client list. We have immersed ourselves in the healthcare culture, discovered the keys to linking patients to services, navigated the strict parameters of HIPAA and entered the brave new world of HCAHPS and physician ratings.
